Area sports briefs: Lentz shoots 62

Salisbury’s Kevin Lentz shot a torrid 62 at McCanless on Wednesday, one shot off the course record.
Lentz had eight birdies and 10 pars on a very tidy scorecard.
His previous best round was 66, which he’s shot three times.
Lentz was playing with Shane Benfield (who shot a 66) and Chris Shackleford.
n Salisbury’s Troy Beaver shot 70 (32 on the back nine) at Sapona Country Club on Thursday and qualified for the Carolinas Junior Championship.
Beaver tied for second place, two shots off the pace.
A round of 76 was needed to advance. China Grove’s Davis Richards shot 79.
n Elliot Gealy (Salisbury) shot 75 in Thursday’s first round of the $800,000 Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational being played in Columbus, Ohio.
n A benefit golf tournament for Debbie Barrier Plummer, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, will be played at Corbin Hills on Aug. 13.
The tournament will use a Captain’s Choice format. Fees are $50 per person or $200 per team. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start beginning at 2 p.m.
