Heat puts dent in De Leon festival, but 5K runners turn out in surprising numbers
DE LEON — Snow cones and cold drinks were snapped up fast as De Leon wrapped up its 97th annual Peach and Melon Festival on Saturday.
Although vendor and visitor numbers were down from last year, Linda Levens, executive secretary for the De Leon Chamber of Commerce, said a steady stream of people made their way through downtown to shop, eat, look at classic cars, listen to live music, enjoy cold watermelon and spit watermelon seeds.
"I'm amazed that this many people would come out and brave the heat," she said while watching shoppers fan themselves and seek shade from the August sun.
Peach and Melon Queen Lauren Casey, who competed for the title in triple-digit temperatures Tuesday night, was among those celebrating downtown. Despite the blistering heat, she kept her sash and her smile in place.
"To be honest, I didn't even notice the heat during the pageant," she said and laughed. "I was just too nervous."
Casey, 17, also won the pageant's Miss Congeniality title.
