In trying to marry the prissiness of the Victorians with the sexual revolution of the 1960s, Tabitha Simmons has come out with an English heritage collection that is a hybrid hoot. “Like rockabilly shoes,” the English designer says of her inspirations, “but — more gothic.” The 49 styles are indeed evocative of the British Isles, with a smattering of high-heel brogues, evening sandals with chandelier trim and suede boots that look like they stepped out of “Bedknobs and Broomsticks.” Compared to previous collections, it is slightly more macabre, yet Simmons, now in her fifth season, continues to demonstrate an ability to imbue classic styles with a modern twist. For example, the Edna heel, a reimagined stiletto loafer, “is beetle-crusher when it’s in black and white,” she says, “and then we did a red and leopard version that has an element of Victoriana.” She’s certainly got a bead on the new monarchy. A pair of nude silk slippers looks fit for a duchess or a Park Avenue princess.
