ESCONDIDO: City poised to double number of late-night venues
Escondido appears well on its way to remedying the city's lack of night life, with five separate venues seeking special permits this year for amplified live entertainment and dancing.
Police Department officials said the number of restaurants in the city with so-called "cabaret" permits would double from five to 10 if all the applications are approved.
In interviews last week, city officials and restaurant owners said the rush of new late-night venues is the result of the city streamlining regulations, encouragement from the City Council, and a bad economy prompting restaurants to find ways to boost revenue.
Some of those interviewed expressed concern that too many new venues opening simultaneously might create so much competition that hardly any will succeed.
"A lot of people may be jumping on the bandwagon," said Councilman Ed Gallo. "It could be too much at one time."
But others said a large number of venues might help the city gain a reputation for night life that could attract people from other North County cities and Southwest Riverside County.
