WAFC warning on GWS draft
WA Football Commission high-performance manager Craig Starcevich has warned players who nominated for the Greater Western Sydney mini-draft not to get their hopes up and focus on performing well enough to get selected at the end of next season.
Players born between January 1 and April 30 1994 had until yesterday to nominate for the special draft which will be held on October 17.
West Australians Jaeger O'Meara, Dayle Garlett, Chris Yarran, Shannon Taylor, Adam Carter and Sean Lynch nominated after being named by AFL clubs as players they would consider under the scheme. Peel's Laine Wilkins, South Fremantle's Mason Shaw and East Perth's Riley Hutchison also put themselves into the pool.
Starcevich said while the opportunity to join an AFL club 12 months before they would normally become eligible was a great opportunity, most players would be disappointed.
Greater Western Sydney can trade up to four picks to established clubs over the next two years and there is a strong chance only two players will be drafted under the special rule this season. The players taken won't be allowed to play in the AFL until 2013.
