Mom's the Word: Live and learn for back to school

The first day of school was always exciting to a big nerd like me.

I wanted to see all my friends again, find out which teachers I had, set out all my new school supplies in my desk, fill up my notebooks with, what else but notes (written in blue ink with headings in red even!). New uniforms, hair clips and ponytail holders, new school bag, and what musical will our class do for Foundation Day? I loved it all.

Hubby, on the other hand, remembers getting nervous palpitations toward the end of August. He was never into book learning, he's always said, and the end of summer brought on weeks of mourning and not looking forward to school (except for maybe the extra sweet glasses of Tang his grandma would make for him every day after school.)

Times have changed.

Many kids don't walk 10 miles uphill in the snow anymore (one way, of course.) They don't have blackboards in the classrooms. (Chalk? What chalk?) They send notes through their phones. iPads are as ubiquitous as glue sticks

My friend Lisa gave me the NICEST hair clip!! It's sea dollars in a nice nickel coating. I LOVE it! I wore it Christmas Eve and it really looked nice. I had recently had my yearly hair cut. Yep, yearly. I can't stand spending money on hair. I mean, really, my hair - what can you do with it??? Not much. I have tried different styles over the years. I have asked about getting it colored. I end up right back to my ole regular - Layered cut that keeps it from being too big and thick. For the most part, it's OK, it works, I can pull it away from my face each morning in a barrette. I walk dogs all day. Do I go styling it each morning so it looks lovely and neat? No, I gather it in a clip and go! I brush horses, I clean stalls, I walk dogs, I scoop dusty kitty litter. I make it look neat as possible,...

I am 14 and I am having trouble finding hair clips that don't look like they're for little girls or older women. I am going to high school and start fresh, so what hair clips do you suggest?
