Hair stylist uses her gift
However, she didn't put her gift of cutting and styling hair to use until after pursuing other interests.
When she graduated from Gainesville High School in 1977, she enrolled at Santa Fe Community College to pursue a career as a commercial artist.
"They didn't have a program for commercial artists, and I went there for two years then stopped going and got a job," said Hayes, owner of Sister Space & More Hair Salon at 201 NW Sixth St.
She said she didn't begin to put her gift from God to use until one day when her grandmother, Ethel Weaver, who was visiting from Rochester, N.Y., asked her what she wanted to be.
"I told her I liked doing hair, and she said, ‘That's what you ought to do then,'" Hayes said.
Hayes said she then enrolled in the cosmetology program at Santa Fe, graduated from it on a Friday in 1980, and began working at Susie's Salon and Boutique the next day. After a brief stay at Susie's, Hayes said she started working at Hair Plus at the Gainesville Mall on Northwest 13th Street while a new Hair Plus location was being constructed at the Oaks Mall.
