Summer at Jimmie Cone: a Damascus tradition
Kathy Steinheimer of Monrovia took her sons for haircuts Friday, then the group of family and friends stopped by Jimmie Cone for ice cream.
“You have to, it’s a summer tradition,” said son Ben, 9.
The family also visited Jimmie Cone on the last day of school, Steinheimer reminded them.
A visit to Jimmie Cone is a tradition for many Damascus residents and former residents. The 50-year-old soft-serve ice cream stand is where people go after swim meets, ball games, doctors’ visits. Years ago it was the place to cap a visit to the movies or a game of miniature golf. The miniature golf course and movie theater are long gone, but Jimmie Cone is still in the same building on Ridge Road.
Dan Leiter, 57, of Mount Airy bought the business in 1990 from Bill Harris, whose father founded it. Harris called it Jimmie Cone because New Englanders call sprinkles jimmies, Leiter said.
“I was a customer,” he said. “One day I went up and asked Mr. Harris if he wanted to sell the business and he did.”
