Sshh. . . let's have a bit of peace and quiet
“This is only the start,” says Gloria. “As more manufacturers concentrate on the noisiness of their products, consumers will come to expect it, and they won’t buy something unless it has the Quiet Mark. At the moment, when you buy a kettle or a dishwasher in the shops, you have no idea until you get home if it will deafen you or disrupt your dinner.”
The softly spoken pair – I find myself almost whispering when talking to them – are following in the footsteps of Gloria’s father, John Connell, a man so irritated by noise that he invented rubber dustbin lids and plastic milk crates. Connell, a businessman and entrepreneur, wrote a letter to The Daily Telegraph in July 1959 to complain about the rise of neighbourhood noise and the lack of legislation to prevent it.
“Although working in London blunts one’s sense of hearing, I nevertheless understand how terrible excessive noise must be to the sensitive,” he wrote. “I believe 90 per cent of noise is preventable.” The response from Telegraph readers was overwhelming – more than 4,000 letters arrived by the sackful, agreeing with Connell and expressing what he described as a “sheer hatred of noise”.
